Description

Vidin-Calafat Danube Bridge over the Danube links the cities of Vidin (Bulgaria) and Calafat (Romania), north west of  Bulgaria approximately 150km north of Sofia. The bridge was inaugurated in 2013, it was part of the pan-European corridor IV and the international road network E79 for road and rail transit.
The main structure of the bridge was characterized by a cable-stayed part supported by four monolithic pillars (spans length 180 m), the rest of the structure was supported by FREE SPHERICAL BEARINGS and transversally restrained by means of  GUIDE DEVICES (spans length 80 m).
The railway track continued beyond the main structure supported on a concrete deck (spans length 40 m).
The installation of  LONGITUDINAL GUIDE DEVICES separated from the bearings was necessary due to the design high horizontal load corresponding to seismic actions.
Besides, the installation of SLIDING ELESTOMERIC BEARINGS in the longitudinal direction by the railway deck allows the reduction of transversal forces in case of earthquakes.
